This May 2 - 6, continue to join OSHA in the National Safety Stand-Down to prevent falls in construction. Many construction workers perform tasks at heights that require protection from fall hazards. Planning for situations where these hazards arise and preventing these potential falls can mean the difference between life and death. Hundreds of fall-deaths occur each year, however, it takes just one serious work injury or death to affect everyone at the worksite. These deaths are preventable by planning, providing, and training: planning for safety, providing the right equipment and protection, and training all the workers adequately.
OSHA has put together a Fall Prevention Guide that helps employers conceptualize and give adequate fall prevention training to their workers. This guide formats worker training into various Toolbox Talks to help those in training receive the information effectively. Anyone can be in charge of delivering these talks but based on results of various studies they believe that peer-to-peer training is the most effective, participatory, and well-retained.
These talks discuss all sorts of potential fall hazards, highlighting ladder safety, scaffolding safety, and roofing work safety. In addition, this guide also includes many other educational resources and materials including videos, fact sheets, wallet cards, posters, and booklets.
