OSHA’s Safe + Sound Week is August 15 -22. The goal of Safe + Sound Week is to encourage the introduction of more health and safety programs started while also re-energizing any existing programs that may be in place. Successful programs are crucial in proactively identifying and managing workplace hazards before they cause injury or illness, while simultaneously saving money and improving a company’s competitiveness. As promised, we will be posting ideas and example activities to help structure your very own Safe + Sound Week campaign that can be adapted to your specific office and workplace environment. These activities work to increase engagement and participation in your safety and health programs by getting managers and workers thinking about and discussing what safety on the job means to them.
Another activity to invoke engagement is managerial challenges. Here we will outline an example: 3 in 30 Challenge for Managers:
Management leadership is a primary element in workplace safety and successful health programs, so this activity challenges managers to take 3 safety actions in 30 days to accelerate your program. There are many ways to show leadership in safety and health, but here are a few options to pick from:
- Make safety part of your daily conversation with workers
- Walk the floor to identify hazards
- Host a short safety meeting
- Write a company newsletter article about your commitment to safety in the workplace
- Make a video on safety with an interview or demonstration
- Post a flyer or poster about safety in your workplace
- Set safety and health program goals
- Establish or update a written safety or health policy
- Spot and reward workers who meet or exceed safety and health goals
- Request a no-cost and confidential OSHA consultation
- Find or become a safety mentor
- Allocate additional resources towards health and safety programs
- Tell businesses you work with about your commitment to safety and health
- Send email blasts with a key message about your safety and health commitment
