May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This month different companies and organizations are encouraged to come together to fight the stigma behind mental health and support those with mental illness and their families. While many know that mental health is your mental and emotional well-being, not many people are aware how often it can change over time due to external factors like workload, work-life balance, and stress.
Studies have determined that mental illnesses are some of the most common health conditions and concerns in the United States. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness in a given year, and just 1 in 25 people live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression. However, no matter the severity of someone’s mental health, they need our support. Furthermore, it is projected that more than 50% of the United States population will be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point. Given these statistics it is likely that many of the people around you or those you are closest too will be affected by mental illness. So, this month and every month check-in with those you care about.
Don’t forget that you’re not alone. If you have any mental health concerns, reach out to a doctor, or use the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Helpline by calling: 800-662-HELP (4357).
