Although a snowy winter can be beautiful, it can also be dangerous. We’ve discussed how winter precipitation like black ice, snow, and freezing rain can cause preventable slips, trips, and falls for pedestrians, but they can also create unsafe conditions in the workplace and while traveling to the workplace via motorized vehicles.

Before driving anywhere while there is snow or ice on the roads be sure to evaluate necessary snow removal tasks for hazards and plan how to do it safely. Preparing and clearing the roads is just as important as clearing the sidewalks. Make sure driveways are salted before a storm and they are shoveled before leaving when necessary. This will help determine if roads are icy before even trying to get to the workplace. Inspect your vehicle or company vehicle to make sure they’re in good working condition for winter driving. Make sure tires are properly inflated and keep the gas tank at least ½ full in case you somehow become stuck and are still able to have heat. Always remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors, and lights, and warm up your vehicle before driving. While driving, increase your following distance from 3 to 4 seconds to 8 to 10 seconds on wet or snowy roads to leave room in case you need to stop abruptly.

When you’re outside, make sure you are prepared. Wear bright colors or reflective clothing to make yourself visible to drivers. Don’t overexert yourself in the cold because freezing temperature can increase the risk of heart attack. Furthermore, know the signs of hypothermia and frostbite and continue to assess yourself and others around you for these signs to seek immediate medical attention. The signs of hypothermia include: shivering, slurred speech, clumsiness, or confusion. The signs of frostbite include: itching, burning, pale or waxy skin, blisters, and/or swelling.
